Moffat is a small town 12 miles west of Crestone. It was founded as a land development in 1912 and hundreds of lots were sold. However, the area, in the center of the San Luis Valley, is cold, occasionally frosting in summer. There is also shallow alkali groundwater. Most people soon moved away and Moffat was for many years a tiny village. In its day it was a cattle-shipping center. As of the 21st Century Moffat is a center of marijuana production.
