Saguache County was created in 1866 from the northern portion of Costilla County. It includes the northern San Luis Valley and considerable land on the west side of the Continental Divide in the Gunnison basin. The towns of Crestone, Moffat, Villa Grove, Center, and Saguache are in Saguache County. Saguache, about 35 miles northeast of Crestone, is the county seat.
