Thunderstorms are frequent in Crestone and the neighboring mountains during July and August. They are usually brief and occur in late afternoon. Occasionally, there are bigger storms which result in local flooding.

There has been one major flood, in October 1913, which resulted in serious flooding in the town of Crestone, rerouting of North Crestone Creek, and loss of at least one house.

Lightning is particularly dangerous on mountain peaks, but could strike anywhere. Electronic equipment may be damaged by strikes close to them. To be perfectly safe computers and televisions should be disconnected during thunderstorms. Difficult, as they are frequent, and, usually, you are lucky enough to avoid damage.
