The Games of the IV Olympiad were held in 1908 in London, England. They were probably the most contentious in history. The American athletes noticed that the US flag was not present in the stadium. The flag-bearer refused to dip the U.S. flag to King Edward VII as they marched past him. The Finnish team left the games when they were not allowed to carry their flag due to the occupation of their country by Russia. The bearer stated that the U.S. flag would dip to no earthly king. Shepherds Bush stadium held 68,000 people and was a technological marvel for the time. The weather did not cooperate and it rained through much of the games.
