The Anagignoskomena, literally meaning "things that are read", are books and passages included in Eastern Orthodox bibles but not in Protestant ones (some are included in Roman Catholic bibles). The Interorthodox Commission in preparation for the next Great and Holy Council of the Orthodox Church says they "are to be distinguished from the canonical and inspired books as regards the authority of their divine inspiration, but they are to be considered, nevertheless, as part of Holy Scripture, and useful and profitable to the faithful"[1] There is some variation between Eastern Orthodox Bibles in what they include, the Church never having formally defined the contents. The Orthodox Study Bible (Nelson, 2008) contains the following:
- 1 Esdras
- additions to Esther
- Judith
- Tobit
- 1 Maccabees
- 2 Maccabees
- 3 Maccabees
- Psalm 151
- the Prayer of Manasseh
- Wisdom of Solomon
- Sirach (Ecclesiasticus)
- Baruch
- Epistle of Jeremiah
- additions to Daniel:
- Susanna
- Song of the Three Holy Children
- Bel and the Dragon
The New Revised Standard Version (in editions including the Apocrypha/Deuterocanonical books) has two others:
- 2 Esdras, from Slavonic Orthodox Bibles
- 4 Maccabees, in an appendix to Greek Orthodox Bibles
