Early history
The first wide-spread appearance of anime in this country, after the events of December 1989, was the airing of Sailor Moon and Dragon Ball on the national (and in most areas, only) TV station TVR. Despite this bold move, as the animes were mostly uncensored, presumably direct from the source (Japan, as on the background Japanese voices would be heard), they were labeled as cartoons and voice-dubbed as such. As a result, there are still many people considering those two series as cartoons, even after all those years.
On other channels (Antena 1), it was reported that Samurai X/Rurouni Kenshin was aired, without the OVAs tho. Other Romanian animes received in Romania and still having an echo or having made people aware of searching for them and discovering the anime phenomenon are Astro Boy, Ranma, Sandy Belle, Lydie, Candy Candy or Lady Oscar. Worth mentioning is that those with possibilities of boosting signal and catching foreign stations (a rare thing those days) have had a greater culture of animes and a wider variety to watch.
Anime as mainstream
The first channel available to start airing animes on a regular basis was Anime+, on around 2004-2005. Among the first ones aired were Inuyasha (which quickly turned in a frenzy), Slayers and some others. Initially, they were "test runned" to see the effect of them on the large audience, although it was part of a wider franchise presumed in Romania to have start in Hungary. In fact, it was rather known in Romania that the hungarians were making the schedule, as those close to the border that cought the hungarian station (by accident, it seems) would observe new shows firstly appearing there and then, after one or a few months, being shown at the Romanian station. In october 2007, Animax took over this channel, changing most of the Romanian staff, as well as the forum one. In contrast though, the Hungarian grip seems to have tightened even more, administrators from the Romanian forum claiming they have no acces to the database of the forum, a similar situation being likely at the station itself.
Corina
Corina is a Romanian singer. To redefine her career, she decided to taggle the new concept of manga and anime, making a clip claimed to be inspired from the phenomenon. Unfortunatly, the poor girl didn't know the difference from manga, anime and cartoons, in a shameful display of claiming knowledge.[1] She was however eager to claim that "the kids" would go for the new gender. Soon after, she made another mistake, claiming that the anime fans were "ortaci" (a plural wanting to come from "otaku", but basicly calling them miners instead). The clip itself was considered by knowing anime fans as a kitch, starring singers with excessivly white japanese-like make-up dancing in strange way.
By all accounts, this was a sad mediatization of anime or manga in Romania, as the singer didn't limit to the above in her comments, roughly claiming "Manga are comic books, as in anime, like Pokemon, Sandi Bell[2].. and who knows what other cartoons", an insulting afirmation to most anime fans, whatever country they live in.
