Columbus is the capital of the state of Ohio in the United States of America.
The city is the largest in the state, with a population of 711,470 as of the 2000 census. According to recent U.S. census estimates, the metropolitan areas of Cleveland and Cincinnati are both larger than the Columbus metropolitan area, whose metropolitan area has a population of 1,500,000. Columbus is the county seat of Franklin County.
Columbus is the home of the Ohio State University, which has the distinction of being the second largest single campus in the United States with a 48,003 total enrollment according to the OSU Office of University Relations. The state government and the university together dominate city life.
Columbus is home to many professional sports teams, including the Columbus Crew (Major League Soccer), Columbus Clippers (minor league baseball), Columbus Blue Jackets (National Hockey League), and Columbus Destroyers (Arena Football League). Amateur sporting activities include the Soap Box Derby under the auspices of the Greater Columbus Soap Box Derby Association.
Columbus is served by Port Columbus International Airport, Rickenbacker International Airport, Ohio State University Airport, and Bolton Field Airport.
