A credential is evidence or personal achievement demonstrating one has the background supporting either the truth of what is being claimed, or at least the validity of the assessment. Formal academic credentials can often be too heavily relied upon, leading to ad vericundiam, or the appeal to authority. However, nearly all strong claims of truth rely upon one's background and experience, even informally, as preparedness to make the claim.
