Critical reception

The movies 88 Minutes was heavily panned by critics. The review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes reported that 5% of critics gave the film positive reviews, based on 117 reviews.[1] On Metacritic, the film has an average score of 17 out of 100, based on 27 reviews.[2]

English critic Jonathan Ross gave a negative review of the film. He described the film as having a lack of depth in the storyline, criticizing the director, and remarking that Al Pacino's role was not demanding enough for an actor of his caliber.

Plot

The plot revolves around a thriller harem anime style, with the main character, although obviously past his prime youth, is sough (and sometimes gets his way with) most of the female characters around him, every one of them apparently still keeping feelings for him and still wanting him back as only hers. The sexual tension goes through the roof, and it is hard to see why - Al Pacino may be a sex icon, but a professor is another matter. There are also strong allusions that Jack considered and even engaged in relations with his opposite-gender students, coworkers or even boss. The below sums it up:

They might also end up dead at the end of the day, but that's a small price to pay for a night with such a famous professor/expert witness. Yeah, don't blame me: I already told you the premise was silly.[3]

Piracy

The film was released on DVD in  Israel in 2006. Pirate copies of the film spread throughout the  UK, South America and the  United States a year before the film was scheduled to be released in these countries.

Quick release

Possibly a result of the piracy problem, and of the negative critics' reception, the movie was aired on public TV stationss very fast after the official release. As such, by the winter of 2008, in  Romania for example, it was already shown twice on more than a half of year distance. This is usually an indication that a movie flunked the box office fight pretty fast.
