The Westminster Confession of the Presbyterian churches (1648) says these books, "not being of divine inspiration, are np part of the Canon of Scripture; and therefore are of no authority in the Church of God, nor to be otherwise approved, or made use of, than other human writings." This last is the position of most Protestant churches. They were rejected by Martin Luther for some verses contained in some of them which seemed to contradict his views, especially a verse in 2 Maccabees which is interpreted as alluding to purgatory "it is a holy and wholesome thought to pray for the dead that they may be loosed from their sins".
