Jeremiah Wright controversy
In March 2008, a controversy broke out concerning Obama's longterm relationship with his former pastor and religious mentor, Jeremiah Wright.[1][2] ABC News found and excerpted racially and politically charged soundbites from sermons by Rev. Wright, including his suggestion that past U.S. policies were partially responsible for the September 11 attacks and his assertion that "[t]he government lied about inventing the HIV virus as a means of genocide against people of color."[3] Some of Wright's statements were widely criticized as anti-American.[4][5] Following negative media coverage and a drop in the polls,[6] Obama responded by condemning Wright's remarks, ending his relationship with the campaign, and delivering a speech entitled "A More Perfect Union" at the Constitution Center in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.[7] In the speech, Obama rejected some of Wright's comments, but refused to disown the man himself, noting his lifelong ministry to the poor and past service as a US Marine.[8][9] Although the speech, which placed Wright's anger in a larger historical context, was generally well-received,[8][10] critics continued to question the implications of Obama's long and close relationship with Wright.[11][12][13][14]
"Bitter, Clinging" statement
Barack Obama on April 6, 2008 at a fundraiser in San Francisco, in response to a question from a supporter regarding why he was not doing well among Democratic voters in Pennsylvania prior to the Presidential Primary scheduled there for April 22, 2008, said "You go into some of these small towns in Pennsylvania, and like a lot of small towns in the Midwest, the jobs have been gone now for 25 years and nothing's replaced them. And they fell through the Clinton administration, and the Bush administration, and each successive administration has said that somehow these communities are gonna regenerate and they have not. So it's not surprising then that they get bitter, they cling to guns or religion or antipathy to people who aren't like them or anti-immigrant sentiment or anti-trade sentiment as a way to explain their frustrations."[15] Doing so, he may have made a fatal mistake of talking about prospective supporters rather than to them, and in a condescending way, discounting their expressed concerns, characterizing them as mere "sentiment".
