Defining dictionary
From Wikinfo
A Defining Dictionary is limited to the most commonly used words that have shown themselves to be culturally stable and of agreed upon use. It intends to be a definition for the language it addresses because it defines the words that are likely to be used in definitions of other words. It is not meant to be a complete dictionary, but a core or foundational dictionary. Charles K. Ogden published the idea in 1930 with the English language. [1] His ideas are in use today [2]
Another example of a defining dictionary is Small Common Words Defined by L. Ron Hubbard. [3] The book defines every word within it by use of illustration and a straightforeward, gradient presentation. [4] Mr. Hubbard was a successful author. He presents a view of English grammar and basic words as tools for use in communication, not as a study of rules. Mr. Hubbard's approach presents the way words are organized so as to convey thoughts, ideas and meanings amongst people.
