Ex Parte Merriman is an important U.S. Supreme Court case from 1861.

Here the court ruled, against President Abraham Lincoln�s wishes, that the writ of habeas corpus may not be suspended, even in wartime or other extreme emergency. The case arose out of the American Civil War.
