The term Free association has two meanings:

Psychology

Free association, in psychology is a clinical technique devised by Sigmund Freud.

Politics

A political relationship that a territory may have with another country, as an 'Associated State'. Examples of this include the relationship of the Cook Islands with New Zealand, and Puerto Rico with the United States.
