Keene State College is an institution of the University System of New Hampshire along with the University of New Hampshire, Plymouth State University, and the Granite State College.
Founded in 1909 as a teacher's college, today Keene State College has grown to 6,400 students, making it one of the larger colleges in New Hampshire, and comprises approximately 1/4 of the total population of the city of Keene, New Hampshire.
A largely liberal arts college, Keene State offers a wide variety of science and arts majors, as well as the only film programs available in a New England public college. Keene State College has one of the most respected teacher education programs in the Northeast, and hosts major annual seminars in childrens literature. Keene's ten largest academic programs, according to the Keene page of the USNH website, are English, Psychology, Art, Biology, History, Computer Science, Music, Management, Sociology and Mathematics.
Keene State is a NCAA Division III school, in the Little East Conference. Current programs include basketball (men's and women's), soccer (men's and women's), baseball, softball, track (indoor and outdoor, men's and women's), lacrosse (men's and women's), swimming and diving (men's and women's), and a rugby club, among other programs. The school mascot is the Owl. Stephen G. Rook (Class of 1994) is currently a New England Modified Fast-Pitch Softball pitching Living Legend. In 2005 Keene State was named the ECAC Jostens Institution of the year.
On August 24th, 2006 Keene State was listed in the Princeton review. Keene State was ranked #83 in the US, the most popular majors being Elementary Education and Teaching, Occupational Safety and Health Technology/Technician. Keene State was also listed as one of the best colleges in the North East.
