Lothair I of France
From Wikinfo
Lothair I (born 941 - died March 2, 986), king of France, son of Louis IV, succeeded his father in 954. At first, his rule was under the guardianship of Hugh the Great, duke of the Franks, and then under that of his maternal uncle Bruno, archbishop of Cologne.
He married Emma, daughter of the king of Italy, with whom he had a son, Louis V.
The beginning of Lothair I's reign was marked by continual wars against the vassals, particularly against the duke of Normandy. With the idea of recovering Lorraine, he attempted a sudden attack and in the spring of 978 nearly captured the emperor Otto II at Aix-la-Cha'pelle. However, Otto took his revenge in the autumn by invading France and devastating those parts he marched through on his way to attack Paris. Otto failed to take the town, and was forced to retreat with heavy losses and eventually a peace agreement was made in 980. Around the same time, Lothait I began to quarrel with the growingly powerful, Hugh Capet.
Lothair I died in 986.
