Madeleine L'Engle, born November 28, 1918 in New York City, United States, is an author.

She attended boarding school in Switzerland and in 1941 graduated cum laude from Smith College. In 1945, while performing with a New York theater group, L’Engle wrote her first novel, The Small Rain.

Madeleine L'Engle is best known for her children's books, particularly the Newbery Medal-winning A Wrinkle in Time; she is also the author of several books for adults, including Two-Part Invention. Her works combine her Christian beliefs with a strong interest in modern science; mitochondrial DNA, for instance, are featured prominently in A Wind in the Door; hyperspace in A Wrinkle in Time; and so on.
