MirOS

- Alternate view at MirOS BSD (Wikipedia:MirOS BSD)
MirOS is a free operating system of the BSD family; it runs upon Intel-based personal computers (i386); some older builds run upon SPARC computers. MirOS BSD started as a patchkit and is now a variant of OpenBSD. In the future, the BSD userland of MirOS might be ported to other kernels, creating for example MirOS Linux, but that has not yet happened. The official About MirOS page explains how MirOS is an improvement over OpenBSD. Among other things, MirOS has better support for Unicode characters needed for many European languages.
MirOS is a complete free operating system; anyone can browse the source code or manual pages online. There are BitTorrents for downloading MirOS.
A related project is MirPorts for installing third-party software onto MirOS BSD, OpenBSD, Mac OS X or Interix. MirPorts is a software fork of the OpenBSD Ports Collection.
Actually, MirOS is mostly a two-person project. Thorsten Glaser develops MirOS while Benny Siegert works on MirPorts. Interest in MirOS may have declined because OpenBSD has caught up in some ways. It does not help that the current MirOS web site is hard to navigate.
Portable components of MirOS
Some parts of MirOS have been made portable to other operating systems.
For example, mksh, a variant of pdksh with enhancements from the OpenBSD and MirOS projects, is available for BSD, Solaris and GNU/Linux systems. Now users can consistently enjoy mksh across multiple systems, without resorting to use of the heavier and stranger GNU bash.
