Biography
Formed in 1983, Pantera are one of the most influential Heavy Metal bands of the 1990's, laying much of the groundwork for bands like KoRn and Tool
Pantera released two forgotten albums (Metal Magic and Projects In The Jungle) before ditching singer Terry Glaze in favor of Phil Anselmo with 1986's '"I Am the Night".
With Cowboys From Hell, and Vulgar Display Of Power, Pantera left their Judas Priest and [[Mtley Cre]] influences behind, and explored new speed, brutality and force.
Up to Vulgar Display Of Power, Pantera's music was fairly strictly along the lines of classic heavy metal with singing and screaming in the vocals (although the screaming is more high pitched than is normally found in nu metal vocals, for example) and the extravagant riffs and solos of guitarist Dimebag Darrell. However, Phil Anselmo's vocals in particular have developed considerably since then, becoming more and more influenced by the singer's black metal influences.
They have toured as part of the Ozzfest (both in the United States and United Kingdom) and with support from Powerman 5000.
Pantera seem to have dissolved over the last few years. Anselmo left the band briefly to pursue other work with such bands as Down. It was thought he would return to Pantera, but he didn't. Instead he formed Superjoint Ritual, who have released two albums. Vinnie Paul and Dimebag Darrell formed a band of their own called Damageplan, which now has one album out. Phil is often critical of his former band members.
