For criticism see Criticism of Pet_(psychology)

A pet in psychological and ideological meaning, is referred to a person that has given up his will, usually involuntary, to an experienced person in this sense, while maintaining (and believing) to have his/her free will intact. A main result of this usually includes alienation from old aquaintances and former close persons, own old ideals and, in extreme cases (this usually being the goal of the transformation the creator does) the adoption of the ideals of the creator. The term was coined by Iusty after the phenomenon was introduced in the Romanian anime sites by Alexander Krieg.

As such, the action of petting is that similar to a psychological manipulation, with all the repercursions that follow.

Abilities

The abilities of such an action are considered to be made by the person, "trained" in a weird sort of way. It has been suggested that some have a natural ability for this, while others are unable to do so on account of their nature. It is also to be observed that most pettings are turning the subjects into withdrawn, closed-minded people who isolate themselves from society and former acquaintances. This action is, by some standards, not too different from a cult or a psychologist taking advantage of his patients' weaknesses.

Pet chain

Main article: Pet chain

Pets are thought to be replicating in descending order, depending on the power and time invested in them. Some turn out as washed-out experiments, some turn out "sterile" in this area, while others uninterested. On Romanian anime sites, this phenomenon began with Alexander Krieg and swirled down to unimaginable places.

There are several types of pets, depending on their closenes, usefulnes and time of keeping:

  • short time pets, persons kept for a few months as best, as long as their persons are useful; usually made from close friends of enemies to try to throw them off-balance;
  • long time pets, those in which lots of emotion and time is invested, or which will always be faithful due to a strong influence at the beginning.

Anti-pet coalitions

Soon after Alexander Krieg became moderator on the Aplus forum, several rather independent groups were formed against his ruling. While partaining to the "bisericute" phenomenon, and some more directed against Krieg himself then of his petting tactics, a few were more concentrated on that (the most notable being the ones formed from Dark Water, green_thunder_blazer and who managed to get in touch directly with Iusty) and claim to have eventually saved at least one person from his grasp, sweetkahya. These coalitions' mission would however often deviate, the particular one becomming in some time more of an excuse for people to gather on conferences for no particular reason. While is believed to not have much to do with it, through time, Dark Water and green became moderators on the forum they fought at one time to keep safe.

Which categories are not pets

Pets should not be confused with other categories that may seem similar:

  • Yes-sirs, people who go around different people pretending they agree to their ideas in order to gain favors or positions.
  • Obssessed people on others.
  • Friends, lol.
  • "Monsters create monsters"
  • Willing unchanged followers
  • Allies

Pets in media

  • In YuYu Hakusho, Sensui becomes the pet of the spirit he spares because of his naive nature; after years, he wants to make Yusuke like him too.
  • Most vampires in Forever Knight are pets to their masters; a more representative episode for this is episode 2, season 2.
  • Vampires', especially Bianca's creations (as vampires, they secrete a powerful drug in their blood which makes people addicted to it and thus creating a form of enslavement)

Explainatory notes

This article is a case study, an (as much as possible) complete and truthful description of a phenomenon that happend on the Romanian anime sites. All described persons and events are real, and happened mostly through the internet, which doesn't make them less real or not worth mentioning, as it had a profund impact on the social life of Romanian anime fans all across the country through time. This phenomenon has started in a wide spread form since the spring of 2006 and, by a spiral effect, continues happening in the present.
