Saint Pierre and Miquelon (French Saint-Pierre et Miquelon) is a French overseas collectivity consisting of several small islands off the eastern coast of Canada near Newfoundland.

First settled by the French in the early 17th century, the islands represent the sole remaining vestige of France's once vast North American possessions.

The island has always been most important as a fishing centre being able to easily travel to the Grand Banks off Newfoundland, some of the world's richest fishing grounds.

The islands had the option of becoming a full [[dpartement]] of France but turned down the option, mostly because it would have to give up printing postage stamps, which are a large source of revenue to the islands.

French patriotism is still strong on the islands and the islanders are proud that all the soil on the island is French, having been brought over in the balasts of ships.
