Beginning with a few traders in 1821 until the coming of the railroad to the west the Santa Fe Trail was a trade route from Missouri in the United States to Santa Fe. There were two branches to the trail. Near the site of Dodge City, Kansas there was a crossing of the Arkansas River leading to the Cimarron cutoff a southerly route. Continuing on the north side of the Arkansas led to Bent's Fort and over Raton Pass
