The Supreme Council of the Republic of Georgia was the first National Parliament of the Republic of Georgia in the post-Soviet era (in 1990 - 1992). The parliamentary elections of October 28, 1990 were the first democratic, multiparty elections in the Caucasus. Chairmen of the Supreme Council were Zviad Gamsakhurdia (1939-1993. The first democratically elected President in 1991-1993) and Akaki Asatiani. 1st Deputy Chairman of the Supreme Council was Nemo Burchuladze, Deputy Chairman - the Chairman of the Supreme Council of Ajara Aslan Abashidze.

By the Supreme Council were adopted many important legal documents: Declaration about the Restoration of State Independence of Georgia (April 9, 1991); Law of the Republic of Georgia about the Freedom of Press and Speech; Law of Georgia about the Political Parties; Law of Georgia about the Elections; Law of Georgia about the Abolition of Death Sentence for Economic Crimes, etc.

After military coup d'etat of December 22, 1991-January 6, 1992, the Supreme Council, Government and President Gamsakhurdia were forced to leave Georgia.
