Atman is the true Self (notice the capitalization)that lies beneath the ego. Under the ego lies the transpersonal absolute, Brahman. Atman is hidden by the ego, but once one can rid himself of his ego he can realize the Atman within him and understand that he is God, for God is everything according to hinduism.
This article is a disambiguation article, whereas the paragraph above is a doctrinal statement that belongs to Atman (Hinduism), if it belongs anywhere on Wikipedia. I am not an expert in Hinduism, but I doubt that the paragraph above begins to reflect the views of all Hindus. I leave that to the author of said paragraph and the editors of Atman (Hinduism). the pages should be merged again. The Hindu and Buddhist concepts are clearly related. Disambiguation pages are for unrelated concepts that just happen to be spelled the same. Of course there are differences, and these can be addressed in separate Hindu and Buddhist sections, or even sub-articles. dab (ᛏ) 10:24, 26 July 2006 (UTC)
- There is a clear enough difference in explanation of the self. For Hindus, it's the immortal self, that goes into reincarnation. For buddhist, it's made up of skandhas. And does not get into reborn. Keep it as it is. The merging would only fuel the confusion of the term. Monkey Brain(untalk) 16:06, 29 July 2006 (UTC)
Discussion on wikinfo
I have adapted this article from wikipedia without thinking much. When starting to think, I found it would have been nicer to start an article anew because the splitting into the understanding in Hinduism and Buddhism may have its benefits in avoiding discussions on wikipedia, but are not necessarily the best solution.
Yet I will probably refrain from exploring that subject here, because this goes to the core of what Man is, and even though I may know what some or the other religion says about that somewhat, the responsibility could be quite... well...
Nevertheless, from my side feel free to delete the article and start anew, then also this talk page might be deleted. Should I ever decide to do start the article "Atman", I might do so. If some other editors should have edited meanwhile, one could either merge or rename.
The concept of Atman is so central and important, that having it as a mere disambiguation page is a bit... in appropriate, somewhat, maybe, I think. -StarofLight 21:51, 6 Feb 2007 (EST)
