The idea represented by the word Term comes from the idea of boundry or limit. [1] A single word is a term, i.e. "What term would you use for the desert's heat?"
- In traditional, Term logic, term means a referring expression.
- in Project management a term of time is defined by its deadline.
- Figures of speech and shorthands are called terms or terms of language.
- Language developed to communicate within a specific area are called technical terminology, technical terms or sometimes terms of (the) art. An example is the musical term, bass.
- A mathematical term is a component of a mathematical expression.
- In type theory, "term" is used for linguistic constructs.
- A term can refer to a fixed period of time, for example:
- the term served by an elected official;
- the term served in prison by a convicted criminal;
- an academic term is a number of weeks of study at a school or university
- A period of time is critical to the term structure of interest rates including mortgages which might be "long-term" (often 30 years) or "short-term" (often 5 years).
- the term of a patent is the term during which it is enforceable - e.g. term of patent in the US.
- In contracts, the terms are the details of agreement. Quantities of time and money are often spelled out in a contract.
