The Blob is a 1958 B-movie about an alien invasion staring Steve McQueen. The 1972 and 1988 remakes of the film are almost forgotten. Now a cult classic, the 1958 film was shot in 1957 in Phoenixville, Pennsylvania (a Philadelphia suburb) using many local residents as extras. The Blob is now the basis for the town's annual Blobfest. In the film, the alien invader is defeated when brave students freeze it with the CO2 from fire extinguishers seized from their high school.
