The Tiananmen Massacre was the killing of several thousand young Chinese in Tiananmen Square in Beijing starting midnight of June 4 1989 who had staged political protests in favor of democracy in The People's Republic of China. The killing spilled out of the square into adjacent streets. Several hundred were killed on the vacant lot that is now the site of the Beijing McDonalds. See Tiananmen Square Protests of 1989
