Tongeren

Tongeren is a municipality located in the Belgian province of Limburg. On January 1st, 2002 Tongeren had a total population of 29,621 (14,560 males and 15,061 females). The total area is 87.74 km� which gives a population density of 337.60 inhabitants per km�. As a center of Roman Gaul, it was a flourishing stronghold until the Salian Franks invaded in the 4th Century and most of the town was destroyed. Rebuilt and settled by the Salians, it was invaded again by the Vikings in 881.
