The Unseen Hand or the Hidden Hand are metaphors describing the secret and veiled power group(s) that control a government or manipulate public opinion in order to achieve a specific agenda. These terms connotate conspiracies in that these groups attempt through subterfuge to affect designs not overtly popular or known. Moreover, another connotation of these phrases also refer to what may be called "shadow government", "invisible government" or a government within a government. Many observers have noted that historical events hardly ever happen by chance but more often than not occur by deliberate planning.2

These terms are more likely used in the United States of America by patriot groups and constitutionalists who subscribe to a conspiratorial view of history. They view a clique within the U.S. government as promoting and advancing the agenda of a New World Order, globalisation and the dismantling of the U.S as a national entity.

A newspaper columnist, Thomas L. Friedman, who walks the corridors of the power and the mighty, let slip:

"The hidden hand of the market will never work without a hidden fist--McDonalds cannot flourish without McDonnell Douglas, the designer of the F-15. And the hidden fist that keeps the world safe for Silicon Valley's technologies is called the United States Army, Air Force, Navy and Marine Corps."3

A Czarist general, Count Cherep-Spiridovitch, who battled the Bolsheviks in the 1917 Russian Revolution, published a manuscript in 1926 titled The Secret World Government Or "The Hidden Hand which exposes how banking interests were conspiring to establish a world government. It exposes how the Rothschild's plan for world government dominates modern history. It talks of this as a "Jewish Conspiracy," in conjunct with British Imperialism, in establishing a New World Order or NWO.

Quotes

  • "When we see a lot of framed timbers, different portions of which we know have been gotten out at different times and places and by different workmen, and when we see these timbers joined together and see that they exactly make the frame of a house or a mill, all the lengths and proportions of the different pieces exactly adapted to their respective pieces, and not a piece too many or too few, not omitting even scaffolding, or if a single piece be lacking, we can see the place in the frame exactly fitted and prepared to yet bring such a piece in; in such case, we find it impossible to not believe thatthey all understood one another from the beginning, and all worked upon a common plan or draft drawn up before the first lick was struck."—Abraham Lincoln1
  • "The real rulers in Washington are invisible, and exercise power from behind the scenes."—Supreme Court Justice Felix Frankfurter, 19524
  • "Since I entered politics, I have chiefly had men's views confided to me privately. Some of the biggest men in the United States, in the field of commerce and manufacture, are afraid of something. They know that there is a power somewhere so organized, so subtle, so watchful, so interlocked, so complete, so pervasive, that they better not speak above their breath when they speak in condemnation of it.—President Woodrow Wilson, The New Freedom (1913)4
  • "The real menace of our republic is this invisible government which like a giant octopus sprawls its slimy length over city, state and nation. Like the octopus of real life, it operates under cover of a self created screen... .At the head of this octopus are the Rockefeller Standard Oil interests and a small group of powerful banking houses generally referred to as international bankers. The little coterie of powerful international bankers virtually run the United States government for their own selfish purposes. They practically control both political parties."—New York City Mayor John F. Hylan, 19224
  • "The day before Woodrow Wilson signed the Federal Reserve Act, Congressman Charles A. Lindbergh Sr. (father of the famous aviator) told the House, "This Act establishes the most gigantic trust on earth. When the President signs this bill, the invisible government by the Money Power will be legalized." In this way 1913 is a pivotal year in U.S. history. That was the year the incipient shadow government controlled by the banking cartel assumed control over the American financial system and therefore over the U.S. economy. Keynesian economic theory would later rationalize this centralization and micromanagement. (It is worth noting in passing that 1913 was also the year the IRS was created.)" 6
  • "The true equation is democracy = government by world financiers...The main mark of modern governments is that we do not know who governs, de facto any more than de jure. We see the politician and not his backer; still less the backer of the backer; or what is most important of all, the banker of the backer. Enthroned above all, in a manner without parallel in all past, is the veiled prophet of finance, swaying all men living by a sort of magic, and delivering oracles in a language not understanded [sic] of the people."—J.R.R. Tolkien 7

Miscellania

  • The term "unseen hand" can also be seen in religious writings of Christian and Hindu writers to describe the workings of God in the world (usually associated with the idea of providence).
  • The famous economist Adam Smith used the term Invisible hand to describe the effect individual self-interest had on market forces.
