Overview
The veil is thought to be a source of fetish for Muslim fundamentalists.[2]
Veil fetishists may be interested in niqabs, burkas and harem-style veils. Some are attracted to women who wear all-covering Muslim-style veils, while others are attracted to women wearing translucent veils. "Burqa sex sites are also becoming more common. These include glowing odes to wet burqa competitions and fashion tips for burqa-wearing Western cross-dressers."[3]They may only have basic sexual desires, or they may believe that veiling should be compulsory for all women. Fetishists include both Muslims and non-Muslims. And it's even more to some Islamist men, who claim to find the veil sexy; Shabbir Akhtar, a British writer, sees it creating "a truly erotic culture in which one dispenses with the need for the artificial excitement that pornography provides."[4] "Because ?western? men had no access to the female sphere in Middle Eastern society, they were inclined to exoticize or devalue it. Generally the perception of the Middle Eastern woman, says Fernea, involved a secluded odalisque ? a lazy, sexy lady in a harem veiled from all men but her husband. Today the image is often of an abused housewife forced by her husband to don a veil."[5]
The September 11, 2001 attacks, the War on Terrorism, the War in Iraq, and other Middle Eastern related news topics have led to the rise of photographs of veiled women appearing in the news. The rising interest in Arabic and Islamic cultures may lead to veil fetishism becoming more popular. One of the main reasons Muslim women wear veils is to avoid being lusted after, which makes veil fetishism paradoxical to them. This often leads to tensions in online communities where fetishists and Muslims intermingle.
Many harem women in sexual fantasies portrayed in films and on television wear veils. Female servants often appear veiled fanning their masters. Harem women exemplify being veiled for the preservation of virginity and mystery.
Control may be behind veil fetishism, as Women who veil are restricted. Veiled Muslim women are considered "secluded, submissive, oppressed" by Westerners[6]. Arab and other Muslim women are often seen in the Western world as being veiled against their will; they are only doing it for religious or social reasons (though many contend otherwise). Such control issues may be seen in other fetishes and paraphalias, such as bondage fetishism.
Women may become sexually aroused by veiling themselves. They may feel protected, or feel similar enjoyment as women with bondage fetishes. Many women believe they are taking back their sexuality by wearing veils. "One common view is that by wearing a veil, a woman reclaims her beauty as her own, rather than surrender to the prying eyes of men seeking sexual pleasure."[7] Partners of fetishists may enjoy the ability to spend time at home without worrying about wearing make-up or their hair.
It is not uncommon for women to appear veiled on Halloween in genie or harem costumes. Brides wear veils, and there are a variety of reasons given for this, ranging from religious to social. Some claim that this is because brides have a divine beauty which must be concealed. [8] "The brides veil and bouquet are of greater antiquity than her white gown. Her veil, which was yellow in ancient Greece and red in ancient Rome, usually shrouded her from head to foot, and has since the earliest of times, denoted the subordination of a woman to man. The thicker the veil, the more traditional the impication of wearing it." [9] This shows how veiled women are considered suboridinate to men.
Tinto Brass, a famous Italian filmmaker, often has his film heroines wear a veil, often showcasing it as a very clear fetish (among other things.)Brian Mitchell forced Elizabeth Smart to wear a veil during her captivity.[10] While the reason was to conceal her identity, he may have also had a veil fetish.
The concept of Purdah is similar to the belief in a woman being barefoot and pregnant.
