Wikinfo:Importing articles from Wikipedia

Jump to: navigation, search

Importing articles from Wikipedia and other open source compendiums of information is encouraged. Imported information adds to the utility of Wikinfo and can form the basis for creation of an expanded or more sympathetic point of view article. Importing articles, and the coding of templates used on Wikipedia, helps maintain the ability of Wikinfo to use Wikipedia material, much of which is useful to the reader.

Templates and images

When an article is imported, often redlinks to templates and images will be noted. Importing the supporting templates also facilitates the import of other articles that use those templates. However, in order to import a template, you must go to the Wikipedia template page with that template and copy the coding there. Automatic importing does not work with templates. In the case of images, they are usually found on Wikimedia Commons under the name "file:name of image". There has been a change on Wikipedia changing "Image:name of image" to "File:name of image". "Image:name of image" will still work, redirecting to "File:Name of image". When Wikinfo's software is upgraded to the latest version of Mediawiki that problem will be resolved.

svg images

Scalable Vector Graphics (svg) images sometimes do not display properly. When this occurs, convert the image to the PNG (png} format and import it also. Create pages for both images, linking them to one another. Edit any article the incorrectly displaying svg file occurs in to use the png image. Many browsers automatically convert svg to png when they display a svg image, simply saving a copy and editing the image name will usually accomplish the conversion from svg to png.

Standard templates

Standard templates on imported articles include Template:Wiki for articles imported from Wikipedia and Template:Common for images and other files imported from Wikimedia Commons. Template:2009 (or similar templates) identify the year the article or image was imported. So, at the foot of an article imported from Wikipedia in 2009, place {{Wiki}}{{2009}}. At the foot of an article imported from Wikimedia Commons in 2009, place {{Common}}{{2009}}.
