Kutaisi (Imereti region of Western Georgia) is second city of the Republic of Georgia, with a population of about 250,000. Ancient name of the city was Aea (or Aia). Old Georgian name of this city is also Kutatisi. It was the capital of the ancient state of Colchis. In 975-1122 Kutaisi was the capital of the united Georgian Kingdom, in XV-XIX centuries - the capital of the Kingdom of Imereti. Last King of Imereti was Solomon II (1789-1810). In 1810 the Imeretian Kingdom was occupied by the Tsarist Russia.
