The Neanderthal valley, famous for the Neandertal fossils first discovered there, is a popular place for excursions, including the museum displaying the human history. The historical old part of the town features a market place and typically castle-style mansions with black slate lining is also worth visiting. The old Buergermeisterei (town hall) accommodates a small local historical museum. In 2004 Mettmann celebrates its 1100th anniversary.
