The Poospatuck Reservation is an Indian reservation in the community of Mastic, Suffolk County, New York, United States. The population was 283 at the 2000 census.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the Indian reservation has a land area of 0.2927 km² (72.33 acres), and a water area of 0.1456 km² (35.976 acres).

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there were 271 people, 93 households, and 67 families residing in the Indian reservation. The population density was 1,162.6/km² (3,040.9/mi²). There were 100 housing units at an average density of 429.0/km² (1,122.1/mi²). The racial makeup of the Indian reservation was 1.48% White, 12.92% Black or African American, 79.34% Native American, 0.74% from other races, and 5.54% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 4.80% of the population.

There were 93 households out of which 47.3% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 29.0% were married couples living together, 32.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 26.9% were non-families. 24.7% of all households were made up of individuals and 2.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.91 and the average family size was 3.51.

In the Indian reservation the population was spread out with 36.5% under the age of 18, 10.0% from 18 to 24, 30.3% from 25 to 44, 17.3% from 45 to 64, and 5.9% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 27 years. For every 100 females there were 78.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 79.2 males.

The median income for a household in the Indian reservation was $13,125, and the median income for a family was $17,500. Males had a median income of $47,500 versus $20,250 for females. The per capita income for the Indian reservation was $8,127. About 36.8% of families and 36.6% of the population were below the poverty line, including 46.6% of those under the age of eighteen and 25.0% of those sixty five or over.
