Network science

According to a book recently published by the National Research Council of the National Academies, network science is defined as, "the organized knowledge of networks based on their study using the scientific method."

It appears that while our database technology has soared to unimaginable heights in only a few years, the actual understanding, the actual science understood about the matter is still quite rudimentary. Hence the new field of network science.
